Milk with fish, fruit after meals: do the food-combining rules hold up?
Do not drink milk with fish. Do not eat fruit after a meal. Do not mix protein and carbs. Indian and wellness lore brims with food-combining bans. Do any of them survive the evidence?

The famous food-combining rules, no milk with fish, no fruit after meals, do not stand up for healthy people. Your gut digests a mixed meal perfectly well.
Every family has its rules. Do not follow fish with milk or you will get white patches. Do not eat fruit after dinner or it will rot inside you. Keep protein and carbohydrate on separate plates. They are stated as biology. They are almost all folklore.
How digestion actually works
The gut is built for mixed meals. It secretes the full range of enzymes and acids, for protein, carbohydrate and fat, at the same time, and every natural food is already a mixture of all three. There is no metabolic basis for keeping them apart, and the old "protein and carbs fight in your stomach" (Hay diet) idea has no support.
Milk with fish, fruit after meals
There is no evidence that milk with fish causes skin disease or "toxins", it is a cultural taboo, not a medical one. And fruit does not rot in your stomach if eaten after a meal; your digestion handles it as it handles everything else. Some people simply feel more comfortable with fruit between meals, which is preference, not a rule.
The grains of truth
A few pairings genuinely matter, but they are about absorption, not forbidden combinations, and they mostly say what to eat together. Vitamin C helps you absorb iron (the lemon-and-iron effect). Tea and coffee block iron, so keep them away from an iron meal. And individual issues, lactose intolerance, reflux, allergy, are real (see curd at night), but personal, not universal.

Eat balanced, mixed meals and ignore the ban list. The real science of "food combining" is about helping absorption, lemon with your dal, chai away from it, not about which foods are forbidden to meet on a plate.
