What it does, and how sure we are
Turmeric's effects trace to one main compound. We show each link, and label how strong the evidence is.

*Antioxidant activity is well-established in the lab; translating it to whole-body health outcomes is where evidence becomes Emerging, largely because curcumin is poorly absorbed.
The one thing to know
Curcumin is only about 2–5% of turmeric, and your body absorbs very little of it on its own. The single most useful fact about cooking with turmeric is how to fix that:
The Spice Lab
Black pepper raises curcumin absorption ~20×
Read the experiment, with the data and the kitchen method.
How to cook with it
Turmeric is a base note, not a finish. It's almost always added early, into hot fat, so its raw, slightly bitter edge cooks off and its colour blooms.
Bloom it in fat (tadka)
Add to warm oil/ghee with other spices. Unlocks colour & aids absorption.
A pinch, not a spoonful
Too much turns dishes bitter and chalky. ¼–½ tsp for a family pot.
Pair with black pepper
For flavour and absorption both. Already true of most masalas.
Fresh vs dried
Fresh root is brighter & earthier; dried powder is deeper & more convenient.
Traditional use
In Ayurveda, turmeric is considered warming and cleansing, used on wounds, in haldi doodh for coughs, and in the pre-wedding haldi ceremony. We share this as living heritage; it isn't the same as clinical proof, and we label it that way.
Is it safe?
As a culinary spice, yes. The amounts in food are well within safe limits. High-dose supplements are a different question: they may interact with blood thinners and some medications, and aren't advised in pregnancy at therapeutic doses. When in doubt, cook with it freely and talk to a clinician before supplementing.
