Does storing water in a copper vessel do anything?
Tamra jal, water kept overnight in a copper pot, is prized in Ayurveda as a tonic. Is there anything to it, or is it beautiful tradition and nothing more? The answer is: a bit of both.

Water stored in a copper vessel for several hours shows a genuine, measured drop in harmful bacteria, copper is antimicrobial. That much is real.1
The gleaming copper lota is one of the loveliest objects in an Indian kitchen, and one of the most mythologised. Fill it at night, drink in the morning, and, the tradition says, be well. Some of that survives testing. Some does not.
The real part: copper is antimicrobial
Copper ions slowly leach into the water and kill bacteria, an effect known for centuries (the "oligodynamic" effect). Studies show that deliberately contaminated water stored in copper for around 16 hours becomes largely free of common pathogens like E. coli.1 Where clean water is not guaranteed, that is genuinely useful.
The trace copper
A small amount of copper dissolves into the water, and copper is an essential trace mineral the body needs in tiny quantities. At the levels from a vessel, that is harmless for most people.
Where it is overhyped
The leap from "kills bacteria" to "balances your doshas, aids weight loss and cures disease" is not supported. And copper has a ceiling: too much is harmful. Do not store acidic drinks (lemon water) in copper, the acid leaches far more metal, and do not drink litres of it. Clean the vessel regularly.
The verdict
As a way to make uncertain water safer, copper storage is real and worth knowing. As a cure-all morning tonic, it is tradition, not medicine, and if your tap water is already safe, the antimicrobial benefit is mostly moot. Enjoy the ritual for what it is.

Lemon or tamarind water leaches too much copper, keep it to plain water.
